Teaching money to preschoolers
I touch a little on money in Sonbeams lesson guides, and will share an activity today on ways you can reinforce learning money/ values of money.
For instance, you’re teaching the number 1. You can use pennies or dollars – pennies are a choking hazard for young children, so be alert! (Dollars will rip to shreds – so also be alert!)
Gather together some items in a room that you don’t mind transforming into a ’store’. Mark these items with something easy for your child to read the price on. Some can be 1 cent (or dollar), other things should be other prices.
Then have your child ’shop’ for things that are the amount that you are learning about. They will visually see the number, then be able to associate that number with the coin or bill in their hand.
For multiple items, they will reinforce counting skills.
For more ideas on teaching numbers, Sonbeams lesson guides teach a number a week – with 5 days of learning opportunities for each number. I strive to relate as many of the lessons as possible to Biblical topics. Visit our Products Page to sign up to become a member today!
