Counting with Toddlers – Snowmen Style
A fun Christmas/ Winter craft for toddlers that involves math and shapes would be fun, right? If you answered yes, then you have to try this out!
Draw some circles (3 different sizes) on white cardstock, construction paper, or posterboard - then cut out. Depending on your activity, you’ll need different supplies. Be sure to look in your newsletter for more options to this game, but here’s one version below:
When you make the circles, be sure to make them distinctly different sizes. You can simplify the drawing by tracing cups, candles, or even the end of a paper towel roll. Your child can help if you are tracing something. Be sure to let them help you, or at least watch. Learning is always more fun when you do the project together.
Draw the number 1 on the smallest size, 2 on the medium size, and 3 on the largest size.
Place all of the circles on the table, number side up. Ask your toddler to find a number 1, and then place this where the snowman’s head will be. Before asking him to find number 2, ask if he knows what number would come next – always allow for them to think.
Follow up by asking if he knows where number 2 goes; yes, under number 1!
Only one more piece – does he know what number to look for last? Where does he put it? Great – on the bottom! He’s made a snowman! Let’s do more – do you think you can? Before you do, be sure to go back and say each number in order on the snowman, pointing to it as you count.
Have fun,
Mrs. Candace
