Lady in Training – Man Too!

Filed under: Character Training — Candace @ 10:54 pm

It started out as something innocent on my part (really, I didn’t make this happen – LOL) , DD decided to be a helper today and bring her lunch plate to the sink after she finished. I had just filled it with water to let some dishes soak before loading them into the dishwasher, andI told her she could drop it in. Then I had an idea…

“Would you like to wash some dishes?”

“SURE!!!!” (with a huge smile and tons of enthusiasm)

Long story short – 2 thoroughly excited children with water almost everywhere and 45 minutes later, I had a clean counter and my dishwasher was loaded up! They were so cute talking between themselves on the step stool – they didn’t know that I was standing behind them some of the time listening w/ a camera and video camera in hand. They were so grown up!

It was a moment to remember for sure. They were excited to be in charge of such a big job, and I was excited that I didn’t have to do the dishes. :) DD couldn’t wait for dinner so she could wash some more! Really, she was almost in tears just before nap because she wanted to wash more. How sweet!

Before, it’s always seemed like it would be more work than help to let them take on a few things, but they are now old enough to really help me out in the kitchen. I did have to go back and rearrange the dishwasher somewhat, but all the scrubbing was already done – yippee!

So today, we not only had the opportunity to encourage and praise DD as she was a servant/ mother’s helper/ future homemaker, but also DS1. What a blessing for a man to be able to help his wife after she’s prepared a meal. I know I’m truly blessed to have someone that will clean the kitchen for me often!

While I do encourage using your own wisdom in deciding when your child is old enough for certain tasks around the house, DO find something they can do that would normally be your job. They will be thrilled to be so grown up, you will have the opportunity for training as well as praising.

What better way to learn to serve the Lord and others than beginning in our own homes!
