Teaching Toddlers
Overnight, my 22 month old has gotten smart! He’s been talking a LOT since the baby was born 2 months ago (my lack of posts lately), and I’ve noticed he’s really learned a lot of things I really haven’t even tried to teach him.
He knows not only most of the colors, but even recognizes some letters and numbers. He’ll count, usually skipping 1, but saying 2, 3, then some other numbers – and 8 will be thrown in there somewhere. It’s really cute, and we had NO clue he was even ready to learn these yet.
And I haven’t even mentioned sign language yet – he was signing before talking, and still signs some now that words are coming out.
I’m thinking he’s going to be like his big brother – a quick and early learner. I feel bad that number 2 and 3 children haven’t had as much time spent with them, but they are still on track and not behind.
How is learning so much at an early age possible? Well now, I can’t share ALL my ideas – that’s what the membership is for!
But here’s a few pointers:
- Take time to say the colors your child is wearing each day as you dress them
- Name which foot or hand you are working with as getting dressed
- Count pieces of sandwiches or food as you place them on plates
- Counting down can be done while you watch the microwave cook food
- For sign language, I can’t say enough how great “Signing Time” has been for us! I don’t even really have to teach them, they learn by watching. I try to sit with them some and sign along with the movie, encouraging them to try it with me. But DS2 was signing words to us very well a 18 months (possibly sooner?). You can check out their products on the link on the sidebar. The ones for younger children are excellent!
- For letters, we have ABC’s and 123’s in the bathtub, and say these as they play. We also LOVE “Word World” on PBS. This teaches not only letters, but the sounds and how to put them together to build words.
Any great tips from you on how you teach your toddler?
